World climate types — what the weather is really like

Every place on Earth has a climate pattern: a typical mix of heat, cold, rain and dry spells that repeats year after year. Grouping places by that pattern means one short label — "tropical rainforest" or "Mediterranean" — tells you what summers and winters feel like, how much it rains, and what living, travelling or gardening there is like. Browse the types below, or search for a city to find its climate.

🌲 Tropical climates

Hot all year, near the equator — no real winter. The difference between them is mostly about rain and dry seasons.

☀️ Dry climates

Deserts and semi-arid country, where a lack of rain is the defining feature — not how hot or cold it gets.

🌧️ Mild / temperate climates

Moderate climates with warm or cool summers and mild winters — comfortable for many people, and where most big cities sit.

❄️ Continental climates

Big seasonal swings — genuinely cold winters and warm or hot summers, found inland in the north.
